The article provides a critical analysis of the contemporary interpretations of the essence of competition, which are based on the Malthusian and social Darvinism conceptions. There are revealed the mechanisms ensuring the development of the relations of competitive partnership and cooperation, which serve the interests of person and society as distinct from the competitive struggle for the existence
