THE "SHARIAH STATE" IN THE REALITIES OF ICHKERIA (CHECHNYA)

Abstract

The article is devoted to a very difficult period in the post-Soviet history of the Chechen society when political extremism (separatism) supported by radical Islam made an attempt to establish a "Shah'ah-based state" in the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and a system of Shari'ah courts was set up. However, already the first sentences returned by the Shari'ah courts revealed that the Chechen society was not yet ready to live by the Shari'ah laws.
